Certificate in Social Sciences
To enrol for this programme, you need to be 18 years of age with basic literacy skills. This programme will give you direct entry to t BA Degree Programme in Social Sciences. Those completing this programme will be awarded a Certificate in Social Sciences. This is also be an entry qualification to sit for the Entrance Examinations in Law and Management Degree Programmes of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
Medium – Sinhala, Tamil and English
Duration – 2 years
Academic activities
Will be conducted at Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Batticaloa, Jaffna and Anuradhapura Regional Centers, and at the Study Centers in Ampara, Kurunegala, Bandarawela, Hatton, Vavuniya and Puttalam.
Grading/Exemption Test for English
The Grading Test for English which I s scheduled to be held on 6th July 2014 is compulsory for all the applicants of the Certificate in Social Sciences Programme.
Diploma in Youth Development
Diploma in Youth Development is a programme offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) in collaboration with the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP). The key objectives of the programme are:
- To enable youth workers to gain professional credentials to practice this vocation nationally and internationally.
- To equip practitioners with generic and core competencies, knowledge, values and skills needed for this field.
- To enable youth workers to facilitate the national development process with enlightened youth policy development, implementation and evaluation.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Three passes at the G.C.E. Advanced Level in any stream, OR
Completion of any Level 2 programme offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka, OR
An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka which includes occupational experience relevant to the field of youth work.
Medium – Sinhala, Tamil and English
Duration – 2 years
Academic activities – Will be conducted at Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa and Jaffna Regional Centers, and at Vavuniya and Kurunegala Study Centers.
BA Degree in Social Sciences
The BA Degree Programme is a multidisciplinary undergraduate programme in social sciences offered in the English medium. The department Is offering a restructured BA programme this year which widens the subject choices for students. It also allows students to select a specific orientation within the multi-disciplinary programme that is offered. More details are available in the department prospectus.
This programme enables school leavers as well as those in employment to enhance their career prospects In the broad field of national development policy planning and implementation and to pursue with postgraduate studies in a number of social science disciplines.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Completion of any Level 2 programme offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka, OR
Three passes at the G.C.E. Advanced Level in any stream, OR
An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka.

Will be conducted at Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa and Jaffna Regional Centers and at Kurunegala, Hatton and Vavuniya Study Centers.
MA in Development Studies and Public Policy
MA Degree Programme is offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Marga Institute, to build capacities of graduates in different disciplines to work in the national and international development sector through government institutions such as policy related Ministries of Finance, Planning, Health and Education, and through the Non Governmental Sector, both local and foreign.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A degree from a recognised university with two years of work experience in the development sector, OR
An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka with at least two years of work experience.
The University will select students for admission from those eligible on the basis of a Selection Test to be held at the Open University of Sri Lanka on the 10th of May 2014. This test will consist of written/oral examination.
The Admission form for the test will be issued with the application form.

Duration – 2 years
Academic activities
Programme can be pursued through the Regional Centers of Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Batticaloa, Anuradhapura and Jaffna. The face to face sessions to be held only in Colombo will be optional.

The application fee for the Certificate in Social Sciences will be Rs. 500/=. The application fee for the BA Degree Programme and Diploma in Youth Development Programme will be Rs. 350/=.
Application Forms for the MA Programme: To be obtained from the Open University Regional Centers of Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Jaffna, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. on all days of the week (except public holidays).
The application fee will be Rs. 650/= for the MA Programme.
Closing Date for submission of applications
The duly completed applications along with copies of the relevant educational certificates shall be submitted or sent by Registered Post to the Centre from where the application was obtained on or before 26th April 2014. The postal addresses of the centres are available in the prospectus.
Please note that there should be at least IS students in every regional /study centre to commence academic activities.
