The Master of Arts in Teacher Education (MATE) International Programme has been developed by the Department of Secondary & Tertiary Education in partnership with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL). This programme builds upon the experience of the OUSL in teacher education. It takes into account the needs of practicing teacher educators in the field. As such, it is practice-oriented in its pedagogical design. A critical and unique feature of this degree programme is its use of authentic learning scenarios to situate the study activities in each course. These learning scenarios have been developed to reflect the kinds of situations that the students are likely to confront as teacher educators.
The goal of the MATE (International) programme is to develop among teacher educators competencies and practices in relation to the following areas:
- Teaching and learning strategies, including assessment of learning outcomes
- Design, development and use of educational technologies in teaching and learning
- Design, development and evaluation of curricula and curriculum related activities
- Management and leadership in teaching, learning and related educational activities
- Research and evaluation of teaching, learning and related educational activities
- Research and evaluation of teaching, learning and related educational activities
This is a fifty four (51) credit programme consisting of six Regular Courses (each worth 5 Credits), a Portfolio Project (worth 15 Credits). and a Continuing Education Course (6 Credits) All courses are compulsory.

Entry Qualification
A person seeking admission to the programme leading to the award of the Degree of Master of Arts in Teacher Education (International) is required to have either
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education from a recognized University, or
- Bachelor’s Degree and the Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognized University, and
Should be serving as a
- Academic staff member of a recognized University, or
- Lecturer of a National College of Education, or
- Lecturer of a Teacher Training College, or
- In-service Teacher Advisor of a Teacher Centre/Ministry of Education/ A Provincial Ministry of Education, or
- Officer engaged in Teacher Education in the National Institute of Education, or
- Principal of a Government/ Government Approved School.(Private and International)
Priority will be given to practicing teacher educators who have at least one year experience
The programme is conducted in English, Sinhala and Tamil media.
All applicants should have a good command in English, irrespective of the medium.
Selection of candidates for the programme will be done either by a written test or an interview.
Priority will be given to those who are currently engaged in Teacher Education.
